Human observations become useful evidence when they are timestamped, attributable, structured, and kept distinct from direct measurement.
Telemetry records what instruments sensed; field notes record maintenance, weather, visible behavior, interventions, and context the instruments may miss.
That distinction matters because irrigation decisions cross several boundaries: a water record becomes a physical delivery, a delivery becomes a hydraulic condition, and that condition becomes a root-zone response. A number at one boundary cannot automatically prove performance at the next.

Photos and emitter inspections can locate failures that an average flow value conceals.
Operator judgment is valuable but should not be mislabeled as instrument measurement.

Use a repeatable observation vocabulary plus free notes, and connect each record to a run and asset.
Start with the decision the analysis must support. Then identify the smallest set of inputs capable of changing that decision. Keep source facts, calculations, model outputs, estimates, and operator observations distinct throughout the workflow.
Make the result reviewable.
Capture observer, time, location, observation type, affected equipment, action, attachment, and evidence class.
What this analysis cannot establish by itself.
Field notes can contain error or bias; preserve attribution and corroborate material claims.
SIM treats an honest limitation as part of the result. Where evidence is incomplete, the correct status is inconclusive or unverified—not a more confident sentence.
